When what we perceive differs from what is physically in the world, like during an illusion, how does this relate to principles of perception and neuronal activity?

Illusions occur when our brain interprets sensory information in a way that differs from the physical reality. This can relate to principles of perception because perception is the process by which the brain interprets sensory information. The brain uses a multitude of sensory cues to build a perception of the world around us, including visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory, and gustatory information.

However, sometimes these cues can be ambiguous or contradictory, leading to perceptual illusions. Neuronal activity plays a crucial role in creating and interpreting sensory information. In the case of visual perception, for example, the brain receives information from the eyes in the form of electrochemical signals.

These signals travel through the optic nerve to the visual cortex, where they are processed and interpreted by specialized neurons called feature detectors. These neurons respond to specific visual features, such as edges, angles and motion. When an illusion occurs, it is because the sensory cues that the brain is receiving are ambiguous or contradictory, and the brain is interpreting them in way that differs from physical reality.

For example, the famous Muller-Lyer illusion involves two lines of equal length, but one line appears longer than the other due to the presence of arrowheads at the ends of the lines. Neuronal activity in the visual cortex is responsible for this illusion, as the brain is interpreting the arrowheads as indicating depth or distance.

This in turn, causes it to perceive one line as longer than the other. In summary, illusions relate to principles of perception because they occur when the brain interprets sensory information; in a way that differs from physical reality, and neuronal activity plays a role in creating and interpreting sensory information.
